Finch McCranie LLP Expands Trial Practice with the Addition of Carl Lietz as Its Newest Partner
ATLANTA – Veteran trial lawyer Carl Lietz has joined the Atlanta-based law firm of Finch McCranie LLP as a partner, according to Finch McCranie LLP Partner Richard Hendrix.
“For the past two decades, Carl has tried some of the most serious and challenging cases that exist in the federal court system. We are extremely excited about his addition to our trial practice. Given his considerable trial experience as one of the preeminent white collar defense attorneys, his addition to the firm not only strengthens our white collar practice, but it also strengthens our long-established serious injury and wrongful death tort practice,” Hendrix explained. “Good trial lawyers can handle complex matters regardless of whether they are civil or criminal. Carl has unique skills as a trial lawyer, and will be a pillar of our civil and criminal trial practice going forward.”
The addition of Carl Lietz is the latest of Finch McCranie LLP’s recent significant moves to enhance its practice capabilities. In 2016, the firm recruited another trial lawyer, Lee Gutschenritter, as another young partner to assist in the firm’s tort practice, especially medical malpractice and wrongful death litigation.
In 2015, the firm added Larry D. Thompson, formerly Deputy Attorney General of the United States, as counsel to the firm. Mr. Thompson was formerly General Counsel to PepsiCo and a senior partner for many years with King & Spalding. Hendrix added, “In 2017, our partner Michael Sullivan recruited two highly experienced Department of Justice attorneys in Washington”
Before joining Finch McCranie LLP, Carl clerked for two federal judges and then tried cases for five years in the Federal Defender Office. He has appeared in court regularly, presenting cases to juries, litigating hundreds of evidentiary and sentencing hearings, and arguing many cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He was a member of the defense team in the Olympic Park Bombing case, United States v. Eric Robert Rudolph.
Since leaving the Federal Defender’s Office in 2006, Carl has continued to devote much of his career to the defense of individuals and entities facing or dealing with federal criminal charges. He regularly handles matters involving allegations of mail fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud, health care fraud, bribery, public corruption, money laundering and a host of other federal crimes.
Carl is a fellow of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers, a national honorary society for outstanding criminal trial lawyers. In addition, in every edition since 2012, he has been selected for inclusion into the Best Lawyers in America. He also is an adjunct member of the faculty at the Georgia State University College of Law, where he teaches litigation and trial techniques. Carl also serves as a member of the Magistrate Judge Merit Selection Panel for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Defender Program.
“Carl has jumped feet first into our civil tort practice, and we will use his considerable skills in trying personal injury and wrongful death cases, as well as white collar cases,” Hendrix added. Being first and foremost an excellent trial lawyer (and excellent person), Carl’s background is ideal for our firm’s practice mix.”
