Washington, D.C., November 6, 2017 – Renée Brooker and Eva Gunasekera, both D.C.-based Counsel at our Firm, presented at the 17th Annual Taxpayers Against Fraud Conference in Washington, D.C. Our firm was also a sponsor of the annual conference. After distinguished careers at the Justice Department, both Renée and Eva are representing whistleblowers in cases brought under the False Claims Act. Their experience spans the healthcare, pharmaceutical, defense, financial services, automotive, cigarette manufacturer and higher education industries.
At the conference, Renée moderated a panel exploring the circumstances under which whistleblowers may be entitled to a share of funds, which results from a criminal, administrative, or other proceeding (known as an “alternate remedy” for whistleblowers). The point of the panel was to ensure that attorneys who represent whistleblowers are fully aware of their clients’ rights to proceeds. Having been the Justice Department’s Senior Counsel for Health Care Fraud, Eva provided her insights on how to advise whistleblowers who work in the healthcare field. Eva discussed how to evaluate cases involving medical decisions that are tainted by kickbacks or improper referrals. These are schemes that involve patients not getting the right care at the right time.
Our firm is a member of the Taxpayers Against Fraud Educational Fund (TAFEF)—a nonprofit public interest organization dedicated to combating fraud against the government. The organization is supported (in part) by successful whistleblowers (just like our clients) and attorneys who represent them, as we do. TAFEF works to maintain the integrity and advance the effectiveness of whistleblower reward and private enforcement provisions in federal and state laws, including the federal and state False Claims Acts and the federal tax, securities, and commodity futures trading laws.
