Eva Gunasekera joined Finch McCranie in 2017 after 9 years in the United States Department of Justice. Ms. Gunasekera rose quickly and was promoted to chair the Civil Division’s health care fraud practice as Senior Counsel. She had significant responsibility evaluating companies’ compliance with, and enforcing, the False Claims Act.
In 2015, Ms. Gunasekera was a lead trial counsel on a several-month health care fraud jury trial for the Department of Justice, the most complex False Claims Act trial in recent history. Ms. Gunasekera also has extensive experience investigating, litigating, and resolving cases involving the fraudulent practices of pharmaceutical manufacturers, hospitals, physician groups, managed care providers, pharmacies, hospice and nursing home providers, other health care providers, government suppliers, and defense contractors. Some of her matters involved parallel criminal proceedings.
Prior to the Justice Department, Ms. Gunasekera was in private practice at two international law firms. While in private practice, she handled complex commercial litigation and administrative trials. Ms. Gunasekera played a significant role on the team that represented the Enron Creditors Recovery Corp. in the bankruptcy proceeding. The team successfully returned billions of dollars to creditors in the wake of the Enron scandal.
Ms. Gunasekera also handled pro bono matters, including the successful defense of an individual seeking asylum and acting as guardian ad litem on behalf of three children. Ms. Gunasekera graduated from Ohio University in 2001 with a B.A. in Political Science and Government and an M.A. in Public Administration. She graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 2004.
